PHTX626 - Surgery (2 credit hours)
Surgery Learning Experience: Surgery; Peri-operative Care; Total Parenteral Nutrition Preceptor: Basma Beiram, PharmD Description: The Surgery rotation is a four-week, elective, experientially oriented rotation where the PharmD student will be exposed to medication management in the surgical care setting. This will include but will not be limited to peri-operative medication management, antimicrobial surgical prophylaxis, deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis and the ordering and monitoring of total parenteral nutrition hospital-wide. Objectives At the completion of this rotation, the student should be able to: • Form appropriate decisions with regard to drug discontinuation and resumption prior to and after surgery • Demonstrate skill in performing medication reconciliation on admission and at discharge • Familiarize with antimicrobial surgical prophylaxis guidelines and antimicrobial stewardship in the surgical setting • Familiarize with the basic concepts of total parenteral nutrition • Review the prophylaxis and management of venous thromboembolism in the surgical setting
